STICKER SHOCK
Garner Asset Project’s Teen Council
continues Sticker Shock Campaign in the community. The
Sticker Shock Campaign is designed to reach adults who might purchase alcohol legally and provide it to minors. Stickers warning
about the penalties for furnishing alcohol to minors are placed on all multi-packs of beer, wine coolers, and other alcohol
products that might appeal to underage drinkers. The impact of the
stickers is increased by media coverage of the event and by longer-lasting signs to be displayed by participating retailers. The project represents
a partnership between
Teen Council youth, Garner retailers, concerned parents and community members, prevention professionals, and law enforcement
with the goal of educating potential furnishers, raising public awareness about
underage drinking, and strengthening the deterrent effect of the
law against providing alcohol to minors.
Safe
Homes SafeHomes is a network of Garner-Hayfield parents working together
to provide a safe home, safe from alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and a safe social environment for underage youth.
The Safe Homes Program
goal is to support and educate middle and high school students and their families about the prevention of underage drinking
and illegal drug use in our community. It is designed to be a communication network for parents to connect with
other parents who have a strong commitment to keeping our children safe. Those parents who sign the pledge and
agree to have their names added to the SafeHomes directory, will have them posted on the GAP website. www.garnerassetproject.com
Popcorn Bag Stickers
Teen Council students place stickers on popcorn bags sold at various high school events such as football games, basketball
games and wrestling matches. Before each event, members of Teen Council volunteer their time placing stickers
on popcorn bags with a message about teen substance use. The message on the stickers is designed by Teen
Council members and is generally based on a campaign theme for that school year.
Banner/Flag
Teen Council members will be designing a flag to be used at various school-based
events with a message about underage substance use.

YOUTH ELIMINATE
LIES (YEL)
When the
Iowa Legislature created the Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control, they stressed the importance of youth involvement
in reducing tobacco use among young people in Iowa.
YEL,
Iowa's youth-led anti-tobacco program gives Iowa middle school students the true, unfiltered facts about the
tobacco industry's marketing efforts.
YEL participates
in activities to fight the tobacco industry's efforts to manipulate teens into using tobacco products.
The primary
goal of YEL is to change the general social attitude towards tobacco use, and to raise awareness of middle school youth through
education.
SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions
Originally, the mission of the SADD chapter was to help young
people say "No" to drinking and driving. Today, the mission has expanded. Students have told us that positive peer
pressure, role models and other strategies can help them say "No" to more than drinking and driving. And that is
why SADD has become a peer leadership organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking,
other drug use, impaired driving, teen violence and teen depression and suicide. SADD's mission simply stated: To provide students with the best
prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving
and other destructive decisions. All high school students are to engage & encourage middle school students
to lead substance free lifestyles.
